Wharepai Domain

Wharepai Domain upgrades

We’re making the domain an attractive entrance to the city that people can access more easily, with fewer road closures for events.

Wharepai Domain is a much-loved city centre venue for sports, events and recreation.

With capacity for up to 9000 people, it’s also the biggest venue in Tauranga for concerts.

Parts of the domain along Cameron Road, Hamilton Street and Chapel Street no longer meet the needs of a growing city.

We're planning some upgrades to improve pedestrian access, protect pūriri tree roots, replace unsafe cypress trees, add accessible parking, and provide better access for event trucks using the Hamilton Street gate.

These improvements will help make the domain an attractive entrance to the city that people can access more easily, requiring fewer road closures for events.

The mayor and councillors approved the work at their meeting on 10 March 2026, with construction expected to begin mid-year.*

Council staff will work with neighbours, sports clubs and other affected groups as these works get underway.

We’ll provide updates on this webpage, along with opportunities to provide us with feedback.
