We're carrying out maintenance work on the waterfront pier and pontoon to keep it in good condition ahead of the busy summer season.
The pier and pontoon will be closed for five days from Monday, 19 October while work is underway to ensure public safety, with temporary fencing in place. During these closures, there will be no access for swimmers or people wishing to jump from the bombing platform.
Why are we doing it ?
Regular maintenance helps protect the structure from the harsh marine environment and ensures it remains safe and enjoyable for the community to use.
As part of this work, sections of steel beneath the pier and pontoon will be cleaned and recoated with a protective paint system to help extend the life of the structure and reduce future maintenance requirements.
What are we doing?
- Cleaning and preparing sections of steel beneath the pier.
- Applying a protective paint coating to help prevent corrosion and weather-related wear.
- Installing temporary fencing and closing the pier and pontoon while work is underway each day to ensure public safety.
- Reopening the area at low tide each day and removing the temporary fencing.
- Keeping the tidal steps open for public use throughout the works.
When is the work taking place?
- Work is expected to start on 19 October.
- The work is expected to take approximately five days, subject to weather and tidal conditions.
- The pier and pontoon are expected to reopen in time for the weekend.
Works will be carried out during daylight hours, with timing dependent on tidal conditions.
Access during the works
To ensure public safety, the pier and pontoon will be closed while work is underway each day and temporary fencing will be installed around the work area.
During these closures, there will be no access for swimmers or people wishing to jump from the bombing platform.
Access will be restored each day at low tide, and the tidal steps will remain open throughout the project.
Please follow all signage and instructions from work crews while the maintenance is being carried out.
What can the community expect?
People in the area may notice:
- Temporary closures of the pier and pontoon while work is underway.
- Construction activity and workers in a boat under the structure.
- Some noise and minor dust during the works.
We'll do our best to minimise disruption and complete the work as quickly as possible.
