Accessibility improvements: walkways around Liston Park and Greerton Hall

We’re building a new walkway and improving existing ones around Liston Park and Greerton Hall, to create better, accessible connections between Hynds Road and Cameron Road.

Why are we doing this?

We want to make it easier to walk, cycle and use mobility devices in the area, now that the playground at Liston Park has been upgraded and the former RSA property has been sold.

Many people, including schoolchildren, used to walk through Liston Park and the former RSA car park to get to Cameron Road and Greerton Village. These upgrades will restore pedestrian access in the area, now that the RSA property has been sold, and create a better-connected neighbourhood.

The project aligns with the Inclusive City Strategy and Accessible Tauranga Action and Investment Plan.

What are we doing?

  • Phase 1 New Liston to Hayes walkway: Building a new concrete walkway between the rear end of Liston Park and the Hayes Avenue cul-de-sac; and removing the existing wall at the Hayes Avenue end of the walkway to create a clear and direct pedestrian connection.
  • Phase 2 Existing walkways accessibility improvements: Making accessibility upgrades to the walkway behind Greerton Hall, as well as the accessway between Hynds Road and Hayes Avenue (blue on the map). This will involve removing barriers and reducing steep slopes to create safer paths suitable for bikes, prams, and mobility devices.
  • Phase 3 Greerton Hall accessibility improvements: Planning future accessibility improvements around Greerton Hall, which could include relocating or adding accessible car parks and improving ramp access for people using wheelchairs and trolleys (pink on the map). These proposals are still in the early stages, and we will work with Greerton Hall on the design of the improvements, to ensure proposed changes meet the needs of users.

In parallel, we’re exploring the opportunity to reopen the connection between Park View Rise and Liston Park. Feedback from Park View Rise residents will inform whether we progress this or not.

When is the work taking place?

  • Phase 1 Liston to Hayes walkway: works to start in late July or August 2026, for approx. two weeks. The works will be completed during the day, between 7am and 5pm.
  • Phase 2 Existing walkways accessibility improvements: works to start in Spring 2026 – dates to be confirmed. These works are expected to take approx. one week.
  • Phase 3 Greerton Hall: stakeholder engagement in Spring 2026; works to take place in Summer 2026/27.

Access to walkways during the works

There may be reduced pedestrian access to the different walkways as the improvements are carried out, but we’ll do our best to keep disruption to a minimum. Please respect signage in place and directions from our crews. Thank you!
