We’re upgrading the pedestrian refuge island on Monowai Street near Grenada Street to a shared pedestrian and cyclist crossing.
Why are we doing this?
We’re working to make walking, biking and scootering easier and safer, especially around schools. As part of this we will be improving crossings and footpaths in several locations across the city this year.
This upgrade is designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, accessibility, and visibility for people crossing the road, particularly school students, families, and park users.
This crossing is a well used part of the neighbourhood. Many people use it to get to and from school, attend sports events at Arataki Park, and access nearby bus stops. Because of this, there is a steady flow of pedestrians throughout the day, and the crossing plays a key role in helping people move around the area safely and confidently.
What are we doing?
We’re upgrading the existing pedestrian refuge to a zebra crossing with shared cycle crossing. We’re also widening the footpath either side of the crossing and building a cycle on/off ramp so cyclists can easily join the shared paths and use the crossing. New signage and pavement markings will support visibility and awareness for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
When is the work taking place?
The work is taking place July and should take about four weeks.
Traffic management
Temporary traffic management will be in place to support safe movement around the site. Any disruption will be kept to a minimum.
