We’re making improvements to James Cook Drive to make it safer and easier to cross the road, especially during busy school travel times.
Why are we doing this?
We’re improving the safety of school children and families crossing the road, particularly in relation to the two bus stops on James Cook Drive near Victory Street.
We’re making these improvements in response to community concerns around pedestrian safety.
Funding is now available, so we’re going ahead with the upgrades that we talked with the community about in September 2025.
What are we doing?
- Adding small ramps at the edge of the footpath on both sides of the road. These make it easier for people using prams, wheelchairs, scooters, or bikes to move smoothly between the footpath and the road.
- A new pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the road to help children and families cross safely in two stages.
- Relocating the bus stops on both sides of James Cook Drive to help improve driver visibility of people crossing the road.
- Yellow ‘no-stopping/parking’ lines will be installed at both the existing and relocated bus stop locations, as shown on the map to improve safety and visibility for all road users.

When is the work taking place?
We plan to do this work in June, weather dependent, and should take around three weeks to complete.
Traffic management
During construction, temporary traffic management will be in place to support safe movement around the site.
