Mount Maunganui Primary School safety improvements

We’re making safety improvements to pedestrian crossings around Mount Maunganui Primary School.

Why are we doing this?

We’re working to make walking, biking and scootering easier and safer, especially around schools. As part of this we will be improving crossings and footpaths in several locations across the city between April and June this year.

These changes around Mount Maunganui Primary School follow feedback from local students, who told us they want safer crossing options near their school.

What are we doing?

We’re upgrading and adding pedestrian crossings around Mount Maunganui Primary School. This includes widening the existing zebra crossing outside the school on Orkney Road to meet current design standards. One angle parking space near the crossing will be removed and replaced with a kerb extension to create more space, improve visibility, and reduce vehicle movements. Bike parking will be installed on the kerb extension to make good use of the space and prevent vehicles parking there.

The existing refuge crossing on Tay Street will also be upgraded to a zebra crossing to improve connectivity and safety, along with new streetlighting and tactile pavers to improve visibility and accessibility.
