Girven Road crossing upgrade

We’re upgrading the pedestrian crossing on Girven Road, located between Hawea and Grenada Streets, to a signalised crossing to make it safer and easier for everyone to get around.

What we are doing

  • Upgrading the current unsignalised crossing to a signalised crossing.
  • Widening a section of the pathway on the Bayfair side of the crossing to form a short, shared pathway.
  • Building cycle on/off ramps so cyclists can easily join the shared paths and use the crossing.
  • Removing two carparks on the Bayfair side near the crossing to improve visibility

Why we are doing it

The current crossing creates safety risks for pedestrians and cyclists due to limited visibility and drivers approaching the crossing at different speeds or stopping unpredictably.

A signalised crossing will give pedestrians and cyclists dedicated crossing times and provide clear, controlled stopping points for vehicles.

Girven Road is a key route for the community to get to and from school, work, local parks, shops, the beach, and other nearby destinations. Adjacent to the crossing is an alleyway that connects Girven Road through to Taupo Avenue and provides pedestrian access through to Bayfair and the Arataki bus hub. The crossing is well-used by primary school students to access this alleyway.

Project timing

Work is planned to start mid-May, subject to power connection approvals, and will take about four weeks to construct, weather permitting.

Traffic management

Temporary traffic management will be confirmed closer to the time. We’ll do our best to keep any disruption to a minimum.
