Shape the new area at Te Papa o Ngā Manu Porotakataka

Te Papa o Ngā Manu Porotakataka is located at 123–141 Maunganui Road, in the heart of Mount Maunganui’s town centre. This urban space features a mix of hard surfaces, lawn, and planting, creating a flexible area to support everyday use as well as a range of community events and activities throughout the year.

The existing toilet block is ageing and needs to be replaced. Its current location and layout have also created ongoing safety and behaviour concerns, including limited visibility and hidden areas. Relocating the facilities provides an opportunity to improve safety, visibility, and overall experience for everyone using the area.

The concept design for the toilet block includes:

• Four unisex toilets. These open towards the carpark with screening proposed in front
• One accessible toilet/family toilet. This opens towards the public space, with a screen proposed in front.
• A storeroom for Mount Mainstreet and activation furniture (bean bags, chess etc.)

Relocating the toilet block will result in the removal of one car park overall. While two existing car parks are affected by the new toilet block location, the proposed removal of one palm tree allows an additional parking space to be created, reducing the overall impact on parking.

While all feedback and ideas are welcome, the concept design shows what we may be able to deliver within the project budget. Not all ideas can be included, but your feedback helps us understand what the community values most and where adjustments or future opportunities could be considered.

The budget for this project is $250,000, including demolition of the toilet block.

We have already met with mana whenua, neighbouring businesses, Mount Mainstreet, and Tourism Bay of Plenty to ensure their views and aspirations inform the project. Ongoing engagement will continue throughout the design and delivery stages.

Yes. The existing toilets will remain open while the new toilet block is being built. There may be a short period when both toilet facilities are closed while plumbing and other services are connected to the new building.

The fountains near the iSite were turned off several years ago due to ongoing maintenance issues. We know these have been a well-liked feature, but the cost of repairing and maintaining them is too high. As a result, we’ve made the decision to permanently remove the pump for the fountains and they will not be turned back on.

The feedback will be used to create a final design. This will be completed by the end of July and will be displayed on the wall of the toilet block or on construction hoardings.
