Starting mid-October 2025, the project aims at replacing an aging wastewater line and re-directing it along a new alignment.
The upgraded pipeline is designed to safeguard the environment by preventing wastewater overflows from manholes. By improving flow capacity and sealing vulnerabilities that previously allowed root intrusion and blockages, the new system will significantly reduce the risk of spills, protecting local ecosystems and public health.
Works will involve creating a temporary access track, installing timber foundation piles, placing a new stainless-steel pipe on top of these piles and finally restoration and re-planting of the construction area. This is expected to be completed in May 2026.
Leading up to the start of these works, we have undertaken the following;
- Creating access tracks
- Tree felling
- Ecology monitoring
- Site establishment
The Mansels Reserve Wastewater Renewal project is part of the 30-year Wastewater Strategy for Tauranga which aims to achieve sustainable, resilient, affordable, and culturally appropriate wastewater management systems for the city.

What is wastewater?
Wastewater is the water we use in our homes and workplaces. Each time you flush the toilet, pull the plug from a sink, or have a shower, that water drains into a wastewater pipe on your property. The pipeline on your property connects to the wastewater network, which carries the water safely to a treatment plant where the water is treated (cleaned) and then released.
