Dog Management Policy and Bylaw, and Keeping of Animals Bylaw review

We are reviewing our Dog Management Policy and Bylaw, and Keeping of Animals Bylaw to check these are working as intended.

Consultation is open

These policies and bylaws cover topics such as the public places you can take your dog in Tauranga, where dogs need to be on leash and what animals you may keep in Tauranga.

Community consultation opens on 1 June 2025 and will run until 5pm, 30 June 2025.

Take the survey now

In the review of the bylaws and policy, we are looking at topics like:

  • protecting wildlife and natural habitats from dogs,
  • dog management in public places such as cemeteries, shared paths or city spaces,
  • and rules for keeping poultry in residential areas.

Note: not all of these issues will be subject to changes in rules as a result of this review. The council will need to consider things like practicality and resources required for enforcement before proposing any specific adjustments to rules.

We are asking for the community’s feedback throughout this review to help inform the Council to understand the community’s views on how animals, including dogs, are managed in the city.
