Takiwā o Arataki

Arataki neighbourhood

Arataki is home to over 17,000 people and includes Arataki, Te Maunga, Mangatawa, Palm Beach and Kairua.

It forms part of the coastal strip and sits between the Mauao/Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa wards.

We’re investing in the future of Arataki, focusing on improving roads, enhancing public spaces, and creating safer, more connected neighbourhoods.

In the future, key projects like the Arataki Bus Hub upgrade and improvements to local reserves will offer better transport links and improved recreational facilities. These developments are vital as Arataki continues to serve as a key access route for both commuters and the broader community and provides convenient access to nearby recreational facilities, including Baywave and Baypark.

Projects happening in Arataki

Palm Springs Boulevard safety upgrade

We’re improving pedestrian safety near the Palm Springs Boulevard shopping centre.

We are installing two new pedestrian crossings, one at each end of the shops, updating the existing crossing on Palm Springs Boulevard, constructing new footpaths for pedestrian connectivity and carrying out some remedial planting in the centre of Palm Springs Boulevard. This includes removing the palm tree for improved pedestrian visibility.

Why are we doing it?

Local residents have raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians in this busy area. Adding new pedestrian crossings will improve access to the shops and bus stops nearby.  Council have completed traffic counts and observations over the years before progressing this project.

Project timing, locations, and traffic management

Construction will begin on Monday, 23 June 2025 and will take around six weeks to complete, weather dependent.

We will complete the work in stages, with the focus of activity shifting throughout the six weeks. Our usual work hours are 7am to 6pm. If night work is required outside business hours, we will keep you informed via the project e-Newsletter and the Weekly Bulletin.

Traffic management will be in place to ensure safety for drivers, pedestrians, and the construction team. We aim to limit traffic impacts where possible, however please take extra time and care when driving through the area.

Changes to the road layout for drivers and on-road cyclists during construction:

  • A reduced vehicle speed of 30km/h throughout the work zone will be in place
  • Narrowed vehicle lanes along Papamoa Beach Road
  • No right turn out of Palm Springs Boulevard onto Papamoa Beach Road
  • At times, no turn into the western end of Motiti Road off Papamoa Beach Road
  • At times, Stop / Go traffic management at the Motiti Road / Taylor Road intersection

Pedestrians

Sections of the existing footpath may be temporarily closed. Please follow signage for detour routes or follow the direction of the traffic management team on site.

Bus users

Four bus stops will be permanently shifted along Papamoa Beach Road to ensure safe visibility near the pedestrian crossings. During construction the following four bus stop will at times be closed: 1052 Papamoa Beach Road, 1047 Papamoa Beach Road, 1069 Papamoa Beach Road and 1110 Papamoa Beach Road. Please be guided by the signage provided near your usual stop for the closest temporary bus stop location.
