Mount Maunganui Library Upgrade

Te Ao Mārama - Mount Maunganui Library upgrade and temporary closure

Mount Maunganui Library is getting a much-needed upgrade.

Originally built in the 1960s and extended in the 1980s, the building is now showing its age, with deterioration in the roof and cladding structure. We’re replacing the roof and cladding to ensure the library remains safe, functional, and welcoming for everyone.

What's happening?

While we’re undertaking these works, we’re also taking the opportunity to refresh the interior and create a new community space — a place where people can come together to connect, learn, and collaborate.

The library will be closed for approximately 6 months from 27 October 2026 to carry out the work safely and efficiently.

Accessing library services during the closure

While the library takes a break for its upgrade, you’ll still have access to everything you need to keep reading, learning, and connecting.

  • We'll aim to have the Mobile Library onsite every Saturday, when works allow, and you can also visit nearby libraries such as Pāpāmoa, Greerton, or the new Tauranga Library in the city centre.
  • Printing and copying are available at our other libraries and at Warehouse Stationary.
  • Justice of the Peace services are available at our drop-in services at Greerton or Pāpāmoa Libraries, and at Arataki Community Centre Mondays and Fridays 10am – 12pm. You can also search for a JP at www.jpfed.org.nz/Page/Search.
  • Our digital library is available with a wide variety of e-books and e-audiobooks to choose from. If you’d like support to learn how to use the digital library, ask our friendly library staff and  we’ll help get you set up
  • For any council-related enquiries you would normally ask our library team about, you can contact our Contact Centre on 07 577 7000. We’re available 24/7, including public holidays.

FAQs

Yes, the building will be closed to the public during the works.

Some construction noise is expected, but we’ll aim to minimise disruption and keep neighbours informed throughout the project.

We'd love to hear what you think of our plans. If you have any feedback, or would like to find out more, email us at mountlibraryupgrade@tauranga.govt.nz.

The upgrade is part of a wider programme of work approved in the Long-term Plan, with a budget of approximately $2.5 million.
