Pilot Bay sand fence trial

We're trialling sand fences along the Waikorire/Pilot Bay foreshore to test whether they can help trap and retain wind-blown sand and prevent erosion of the foreshore bank.

Why are we doing it?

Wind-blown sand is contributing to erosion along the Pilot Bay foreshore. This trial aims to test whether sand fences can help trap and retain sand, supporting future planting and stabilisation of the foreshore bank.

What are we doing?

We’ve installed three 12-metre-long sand fences in selected areas that are particularly vulnerable to sand loss and erosion. We will monitor the sand over the summer period to assess their effectiveness.

When are we doing it?

The fences are now in place and will remain over the summer season, until the end of February 2026.

What to expect while the trial is underway

There will be no impact to public access of the Pilot Bay beach. The fences are located in areas that do not obstruct pathways or access points.
