November 2025 update
Interim pathway construction begins Monday, 10 November
We’re starting work on a temporary pathway between two vacant lots in the city centre, at 79 Grey Street and 134 Durham Street.
This interim connection will improve pedestrian access to public transport, the University of Waikato, and nearby shops and eateries. It will remain in place while plans progress for a permanent laneway.
The Council acknowledges that the temporary pathway does not meet aspirations for universal accessibility.
The permanent laneway project is being design to provide safe, accessible connections for people of all ages and abilities. Plans for the permanent laneway will be presented to the mayor and councillors early next year.
Construction of the interim pathway is expected to take up to three weeks, with minimal impact on pedestrians, parking, or traffic.
What's happening
We're working on plans to create a new laneway across the vacant lots at 79 Grey Street and 134 Durham Street.
The new space will offer students, bus users and pedestrians an easier way to move between the two streets.
In short, it will offer people better access to public transport, the University of Waikato, shops and food outlets.
Development opportunity
In November 2024, our Project Planning and Monitoring Committee approved the sale of the 79 Grey Street site through an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process.
As part of this process, we're keen to hear about any proposals to develop the site with a high-quality urban design.
A condition of sale is that the new development must include a public pedestrian laneway between Grey Street and Durham Street, enhancing city connectivity and activating the urban environment.
We're seeking a developer with a strong track record and a compelling vision that aligns with the city’s revitalisation goals.
Please get in touch with our City Development Team at CityDevelopment@tauranga.govt.nz if you wish to express interest in developing the site.
