Carlton Street Reserve skatepark upgrade

Carlton Street Reserve skatepark upgrade

We’re upgrading the skatepark at Carlton Street Reserve to create an exciting, modern space for young people in Ōtūmoetai to skate, scoot, ride and connect.

Tell us what you think

Tell us where you think the upgraded skatepark should be located.

While it’s important the upgraded skatepark meets the needs of users, we also want to hear from neighbours and the wider community. This will help us make sure the location works well for the whole reserve and those who live nearby. Once the location is confirmed, the design of the skatepark will be created with local kids and guided by hapū.

Community consultation opens on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 and will run until 5pm, Friday, 8 August 2025.

Share your feedback

With roller sports and wheeled play on the rise, we’re responding to the community’s call for more inclusive, accessible and high-quality places to ride.

The new design will strike a balance between skateboarding, scootering and BMX—catering to a range of skill levels. Expect new ramps, rails, transitions and fun boxes.

The skatepark will be co-created with the community, especially local rangatahi, who will help shape how the space looks, feels, and functions.

Construction is planned for 2026, but the design journey is already underway.

Let's get rolling

The first step is deciding where within Carlton Street Reserve the upgraded skatepark will be located. There are two proposed locations for the community to consider.

While it’s important the skatepark meets the needs of users, we also want to hear from neighbours and the wider community. This is a space for everyone, so community feedback will help us make sure the location works well for the whole reserve and those who live nearby.

Join us for a site walk to learn more about the two proposed locations —why they’ve been considered, how each would work, and what it could mean for the wider park. Council staff will be on hand to answer questions and talk through the options.

When: Saturday 26 July, 10:00am–11:00am
Where: Carlton Street Reserve main carpark (near the toilets)
What: Site walk exploring the two proposed skatepark location

Location

The community is helping to shape the future of this space by having a say on the skatepark’s location. Once that’s confirmed, the actual design—how the skatepark will look, feel, and function—will be created with local kids and rangatahi, guided by hapū to reflect the stories of the area. Whether you’re a park neighbour, a skatepark user, or simply interested in how the reserve is used, we encourage you to come along, check out the proposed locations, and be part of the conversation.

Location A – Ngatai Road

  • This is the site of the existing skate park
  • Plenty of nearby off-street parking (100 spaces)
  • There is a wheel friendly pathway off Ngatai Road through the car park
  • Close to facilities, such as the toilet block, picnic tables, drinking fountain and shade
  • There is no wheel friendly access from Carlton Road
  • Full lighting of the location would be possible

Location B – Carlton Street

  • This site is near the existing playground
  • The site will be wheel friendly from Carlton Street
  • Close to amenities, such as picnic tables and shade sails
  • Less nearby off-street parking (20 spaces)
  • There is no wheel friendly access from Ngatai Road
  • It is a 5-minute walk to the toilet block and additional off-street parking
  • There may be some restriction on lighting at this location
  • Better visibility from the street
