Bethlehem Road: Improving road safety and stormwater management
We recently completed Stage 2 of the Bethlehem Road safety and stormwater upgrades. Now, we’re continuing the upgrade to make improvements to a small section of Bethlehem Road directly outside Hangarau Marae.
Why are we doing it?
The community has raised safety concerns about this area, highlighting the lack of safe crossing points and a long, uninterrupted stretch of road making higher vehicle speeds a risk.
This work focuses on enhancing safety for local tamariki outside Hangarau Marae. The upgrades are designed to slow traffic, improve visibility, and create safer walking and cycling routes.
What are we doing?
The new safety features outside the marae include a pedestrian crossing, speed humps and a shared path and streetlights.
Some minor stormwater upgrades will be made in this phase of work. Full stormwater upgrades will be looked at in the future.
Construction will begin on Monday, 3 November 2025 and is expected to take six weeks to complete, weather permitting.
