Omanu Way safety improvements
Following the intersection changes on Girven Road, which have improved traffic flow on the main route between Pāpāmoa and the Mount, we’re continuing to make it safer and easier for beachgoers and local residents to move around Arataki.
Work has begun on the Omanu Way safety improvements which include two new pedestrian crossings near Omanu Way, one on Oceanbeach Road and one on Maranui Street. A shared path will be added on Maranui Street connecting to Omanu Way. We are also upgrading the existing refuge closer to Girven Road and adding kerb ramps to Seaspray Drive. New CCTV cameras will also be installed to help Council make a future decision regarding changing Omanu Way to one-way traffic.
Construction began 2 December 2025 and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete, weather permitting. Any minor works not completed before the Christmas break will be completed in January with minimum disruption.
Working hours are generally between 7am and 5pm. However, we will need to undertake some night works prior to 10pm to minimise traffic impact. Traffic management will be in place during construction. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please follow the 30km/h speed restrictions at the work sites and follow the instructions given by the traffic management staff. At times there will be pedestrian diversions around the works on Maranui Street, Seaspray Drive, Oceanbeach Road and Omanu Way.

Why is change necessary?
Maranui Street, Girven Road and Oceanbeach Road are key routes for the community to get to and from school, work, local parks, shops, the beach, and other nearby destinations.
Over the past few years, you’ve let us know that getting around safely and easily between Pāpāmoa and the Mount can be challenging, especially at peak times. Increasing growth in the Arataki area has put a strain on the current roading infrastructure, and Oceanbeach Road is becoming a common link for pedestrians and cyclists to access the new beach pathways located along Pāpāmoa Beach Road and Marine Parade.
A safety review supported the need to improve the Oceanbeach Road and Girven Road intersection to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, while assisting peak hour traffic flow.
The redesigned intersection at Oceanbeach Road and Girven Road, new roundabout at Girven Road and Maranui Street intersection, shared pathways, and improved pedestrian crossing options will increase safety for everyone who travels through the area, no matter what mode of transport they choose.
These improvements are part of a wider plan to make Pāpāmoa, Arataki and the Mount safer for people to move about.
New CCTV will be installed in December to help Council make a future decision regarding restricting Omanu Way to one-way traffic.
The Omanu Way safety improvements are planned to begin the first week of December 2025 and will take approximately four weeks to complete, weather dependent. This will come with temporary speed reductions and stop/go traffic management when needed. Pedestrians will be diverted at the shoulder closures for both pedestrian crossing sites, with signage to guide their path.
