There are no private buildings that are considered earthquake prone (under the current or proposed rules) on Devonport Road.
More broadly, there are currently only 19 buildings* on the earthquake-prone building register in Tauranga.
- Six of those are owned by Tauranga City Council and/or Bay Venues Ltd
- There are four properties owned by wider government - including the fire station, hospital, part of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council building, and a Defence Force-owned building
- Nine of the properties are privately owned
This is a relatively low number of earthquake-prone buildings compared with other cities and towns.
Of the 19 buildings, our initial analysis suggests that 13 will likely remain classified as an Earthquake Prone Building under the new proposed rules. However, in some cases the required remediation is proposed to be significantly reduced compared with the current requirements.
It is important to note that the proposed changes still have to go through the law-making process before they have legal effect and before we can definitively act upon them, however, we have done initial investigations into the likely impact. We understand the government’s plan is for this policy position to be made into law before the general election next year.
The council, like all owners of affected properties, will need be to review our buildings and decide whether to continue with any plans to remediate current earthquake prone buildings. The soonest deadline for council-owned buildings is 2041.
In many cases, the proposed changes reduce the extent and cost of remediation and can in some cases extend the timeframes for compliance. We will continue to work with all earthquake prone building owners to ensure buildings in Tauranga are safe and compliant.
*Please note: Tauranga Hospital has been counted as a single property. There are eight areas to the Hospital building on the earthquake prone register which are, Tauranga Hospital North Wing, Radiology T28, Tauranga Hospital Building 50, Tauranga Hospital Kitchen Block, Tauranga Hospital Wards Block West, Stair and Elevator Tower, Tauranga Hospital Emergency Department and Tauranga Hospital Podium. 110 Hamilton St has also been counted a single building which is made up of nine units.
