We will also be upgrading the streetscape to complement the work currently underway on Elizabeth Street between Devonport Road and Grey Street, creating an attractive and safer environment for the community.
At the same time, we are improving access between Elizabeth Street and The Strand Extension, with a new walkway that will feature a cycle runnel (a guide alongside the stairway so people can wheel their bikes up and down without having to lift and carry them) to make sure pedestrians and cyclists can use it safely. So we can get this work done, we have closed the current stairs temporarily through to December.
In time, people will be able to go between the top of Elizabeth Street, down the new walkway, and through the recently installed rail underpass to link with a new boardwalk along the water’s edge into the city centre.
Why are we doing this?
Work is underway to revitalise our city centre so it becomes a place where people from near and far want to visit, learn, live, work and play.
As part of this, we are upgrading key city centre streetscapes and public spaces. This will help transform our city centre into an even greater place for our community and visitors to enjoy.
