What's happening
The upgrades are part of a pilot scheme to offer 'sanctuary spaces' in the city centre while many big projects in the surrounding streets transform Tauranga into a modern city.
The upgrades will remain in place for the next few years with a view to a more permanent upgrade occurring at a future date.
Plans are still being finalised, but will likely include:
- a public art sculpture
- a digital isite kiosk
- native and exotic plants
- improved lighting
- new seating
- at least one play area.
We're looking to complete the project in about four months in mid to late 2024 so the space is available as soon as possible.
We intend to cordon off a small section at a time to minimise disruption. The square will remain open and usable while the works are underway.
The council has been working on the plans with nearby businesses, residents and property owners.
The project comes soon after the completion of several other projects in the city centre - including Elizabeth St east and Tunks Reserve upgrades, the Cargo Shed revamp, Spring St car park seismic strengthening and the opening of more than 100 car parks in Dive Crescent.
