Miro Street parking improvements

We proposed a practical, cost-effective solution to improve safety, provide more parking, and make it easier for everyone to get around, using the existing road space.

By changing Miro Street, between Matai Street and Hinau Street, to one-way, we can add extra parking spaces, easing parking pressure and improving access with minimal disruption.

• Changing Miro Street, between Matai Street and Hinau Street, to one-way
• Adding new angled parking spaces along this section of Miro Street
• Converting all existing parking spaces on this section of Miro Street to angled parking
• Adding new angled parking spaces on Matai Street, between Miro Street and Maunganui Road, while keeping two-way traffic flow

We were also interested to hear if there was support for improvements to the wider area to help ease parking pressure on nearby streets, especially during large events. This could include:

• Changing Tawa Street, between Matai Street and Puriri Street, to one-way
• Changing an additional section of Miro Street, between Matai Street and Puriri Street, to one-way
• Adding new angled and parallel parking spaces along these sections of road.

These wider changes could add an additional 33 parking spaces - bringing the total to up to 55 new parking spaces in the area. This would not only provide more parking for local residents but also benefit the wider community, particularly during major events at Blake Park. It would also help accommodate the needs of new housing developments in the area. It's all part of our plan to make sure our neighbourhoods are well-connected, accessible, and ready for the future.

Parking surveys identified that the section of Miro Street between Matai Street and Hinau Street has the highest demand for parking, so that’s where we’re starting.

We’re also considering seeking feedback on additional one-way changes on Miro Street and Tawa Street (between Matai Street and Puriri Street) as part of potential wider area improvements. These sections were identified as having berm parking issues at times and one-way solution can be easily replicated on these two streets.

Widening Miro Street would require significant roadworks and cost. Changing a section to one-way makes better use of the existing road space, adds parking, and improves safety with minimal disruption. Making the road one-way also has a much lower estimated cost-per-parking space.

Cars parking on the grass berm block visibility for drivers entering and exiting driveways, put pedestrians - especially children and families - at risk, damage the grass, and restrict access to underground services.

Yes. All properties will still be accessible by vehicle. The one-way layout will slightly change how people enter or exit the street, but access to driveways will remain.

We expect roadworks to be minimal, depending on the final design. You can expect short-term lane or intersection closures while the one-way system and new parking are constructed. We’ll keep residents informed before any work begins.

We’re balancing cost and community benefit. The one-way system offers the best value for money while meeting parking needs and improving safety.

The changes on Miro Street and Matai Street, inlcuding the new footpath, are estimated to cost $450,000. By making the most of the existing road space, we can add parking, improve safety, and future-proof the street without major roadworks.
