Matariki Tauranga Moana 2020 - E whai ake nei - what's coming up!

There is plenty for everyone to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in Tauranga Moana. Here’s what’s coming up in the five days ahead.

For tamariki (children) 

Fun for the whole whānau 

  • 18 and 19 Hōngongoi: Learn to make your own Kapa Haka Poi while you explore and learn Waiata (songs) with the accompanying Poi actions. A chance to look at and understand the origin and whakapapa of Poi. Make a kapa haka poi - Tauranga
  • 18 Hōngongoi: Matariki inspired creative activities provide an opportunity to make something beautiful from natural resources from our own environment. Natural treasures workshop - Tauranga
  • 19 Hōngongoi: A storytelling and design workshop where you can share the story of how you or your whanau came to live in New Zealand, and your hopes and desires for the future of Tauranga or New Zealand/Aotearoa. These stories will form the basis of the design for your decorated hoe (paddle). This is us - he waka eke noa - Tauranga
  • 21 Hōngongoi: An opportunity to watch three of local film maker Mita Tereremoana Tahata’s acclaimed short films followed by a Q&A discussion panel with the subjects of his films and himself.  E toru nga mea - film and panel discussion -Tauranga

  • 21 Pipiri – 21 Hōngongoi: Ngati Ranginui iwi present Tumokemoke – a moteatea and traditional waiata, knowledge, history, tupuna and sites of significance. Tumokemoke
  • 21 Pipiri – 21 Hōngongoi: Te Runanga o Ngāi Te Rangi iwi present a new special video series ‘Ngā Marae o Tauranga Moana’ sharing intrinsic and unique history, moteatea and waiata pertinent to each area. Mataraunui: Matariki 2020
