Matariki Tauranga Moana 2020 - E whai ake nei - what's coming up!

There is plenty for everyone to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in Tauranga Moana. Here’s what’s coming up in the seven days ahead.

For tamariki (children)

  • 10 Hōngongoi: Join a fun session learning all about what the stars Waipuna-a-rangi and Ururangi represent. Crafts to take home and a weather science experiment.

  • 13, 15 and 16 Hōngongoi: Tupuanuku is the star connected with everything that grows within the soil – hear the story of how kumara came to Aotearoa and learn how to grow kumara at home.

  • 13, 14 and 16 Hōngongoi: Learn about Matariki stars Tupu-a-nuku and Tupu-a-rangi. Have fun and learn through activities and stories. Make a taniko cross-stitch.

Matariki fun for the whole whānau

  • 11 Hōngongoi: Learn about the history and elements of Hip Hop culture. Use your skills and knowledge to write rhymes and develop your own style.

  • 15 and 16 Hōngongoi: Our digital specialists can place you in the sky with our beautiful Matariki star cluster. Download your image at home and share with loved ones.

  • 16 Hōngongoi: Build a double-hulled waka with a modern twist. Learn a little about traditional Māori navigation process and how navigators used Te kapehu whetu (star compass).

Online learning (Kōnae ipurangi)

  • 13 Hōngongoi to 21 Hōngongoi: Pātaka korero – Join library staff as they share letters written by the first land surveyors stationed here in Tauranga which shed light on Tauranga Moana both then and now.
