Tauranga City, Judea and Brookfield wastewater network renewals

We’re carrying out renewal works across Tauranga’s wastewater network, with work scheduled in parts of Tauranga City, Judea and Brookfield starting in May 2025. The first phase of works will focus on wastewater renewals in the Tauranga City area. The next phase after this will focus on areas in Judea and Brookfield. This page will be updated periodically with the latest areas programmed for wastewater renewal.

Why are we doing it?

Over time, our wastewater pipes can deteriorate due to wear and tear, causing cracks, holes, and weakened pipe walls. If left unaddressed, this damage can cause wastewater to leak into the surrounding ground and waterways, and in severe cases, this can result in blockages, sinkholes, or wastewater overflows.

To prevent these issues, we carry out annual wastewater renewals across the city using a method called pipe relining, where a new liner is installed inside the damaged pipe.

Works will occur during the day between 6am and 6pm. There may be some noise while works take place and odour may be present in the area during the lining installation.

FAQs

I live at a property where wastewater renewals are taking place. How will this affect me?

We will need your help limiting water usage while works are underway. After we install the wastewater pipe liner, your property's connection to the main sewer line will be temporarily blocked to prevent overflows. This will occur between 8am and 3pm on a specific day, which we will notify you of in advance via letter. We will advise when your wastewater connection is restored via a door knock which should be completed by the end of the shift. While works are underway, please:

  • Limit flushing toilets
  • Avoid using dishwashers or washing machines
  • Don’t empty your tub, bath, basin or sink
  • Switch off automatic wastewater discharge pumps (*If you have an automatic pump fitted to your sewer system, please let us know as soon as possible by calling David Louw, Tauranga City Council Waters Project Manager, 07 527 7000)

Will the works be disruptive?

Wastewater pipe relining is a minimally disruptive method of pipe renewal that typically doesn’t require excavation, as it uses access through manholes. This allows the work to be completed faster, more cost-effectively, and with less impact. However, there are some areas where temporary traffic management will be required, which may include footpath or parking closures, depending on the location of the pipes.
